Steve Howie

I am a landscape painter and it is urban landscapes that interest me. They allow me to use the full colour spectrum, combining the brightness of painted buildings with the more subtle colours of the natural environment. Similarly, the geometric lines of man made structures, and the resulting strong shadows contrast with the fluid shapes of nature.

My pictures are naturalistic, as they observe the rules of perspective and randomness. They start with a drawing done on location and are completed in my studio as oils on canvas, or acrylics on paper.

I have long been a surfer with a strong affinity with the ocean, and place a lot of value on a view of water within my works. My sketches and paintings provide a visual diary of my own environment and experiences.
